COPPA Compliance
ScholarX is committed to the safety and privacy of young users. We apply COPPA-aligned protections for all children under 13 and additional safeguards for users under 18.
What is COPPA?
COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) is a United States federal law designed to protect the online privacy of children under 13. It requires operators of websites and online services to obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information from children.
ScholarX serves students from Grade 9–12, which may include children under 13. We voluntarily adopt COPPA-equivalent protections globally to ensure the safety of all young users on our platform.
ScholarX is designed to be safe for students of all ages. We collect only the minimum information necessary, and apply the strictest protections to users identified as under 13 years of age.
What We Collect from Younger Users
For users under 13 (or where age is uncertain), ScholarX limits data collection to the absolute minimum required to provide educational services:
- Collected with parental consent: First name, grade level, subject preferences, and a parent-provided email address for account notifications
- Collected automatically: Learning progress data, quiz scores, and anonymised usage analytics to improve the AI system
- Never collected from under-13 users: Full name publicly displayed, phone number, location beyond city level, social media links, profile photos, or payment information
If we discover that a user under 13 has provided personal information without verifiable parental consent, we will immediately delete that information and suspend the account pending re-verification.
Parental Consent Process
Before a child under 13 can create or use a ScholarX account, we require verifiable parental or guardian consent through the following process:
Age Declaration
The registration form asks for the user's date of birth. Users identified as under 13 are flagged immediately.
Parent Email Required
A parent or guardian email is required. A verification email is sent immediately to that address.
Consent Confirmation
The parent reviews our COPPA notice and grants or denies consent via a secure link valid for 48 hours.
Account Activation
Only after confirmed parental consent is the child's account activated with restricted data collection settings.
School-Based Enrolment
Where students are enrolled via a school institutional account, the school takes responsibility for obtaining COPPA-compliant consent from parents on ScholarX's behalf, as permitted under the school official exception.
Parental Rights
Parents and guardians of children under 13 have the following rights at any time, which can be exercised by contacting us at privacy@scholarx.pk:
- Review: Request a complete copy of all personal information collected from their child
- Delete: Request deletion of any or all personal information collected from their child
- Withdraw consent: Revoke consent at any time, which will result in account suspension and data deletion
- Restrict: Ask us to limit data collection to the bare minimum necessary for platform access
- Object: Prevent further collection or use of their child's data without deleting the account
Withdrawing consent will not affect the legality of any data processing that occurred prior to withdrawal. We will process all parental requests within 10 business days.
Safety Features for Young Users
In addition to COPPA compliance, ScholarX implements additional safety measures to protect all users under 18:
- Under-13 profiles are hidden from public searches and not visible to other students
- Direct messaging between students is disabled for users under 13 — all communication is teacher-to-student only
- All teacher accounts undergo identity verification before being permitted to interact with student accounts
- Inappropriate content filters are applied to all user-generated content
- Parents receive monthly email summaries of their child's platform activity
- Advertising is completely absent from ScholarX — no behavioural profiling for ads, ever
- Users under 18 cannot make purchases — all transactions require an adult account holder
